Routinely checking the engine oil in your Volkswagen is a great way to stay on top of your vehicle’s health. Checking oil levels and oil consistency can be important to your vehicle’s performance and longevity. Emich VW of Boulder would like to help you with tips to properly check your oil so that you know if you need to schedule an appointment with our Service Center to get it changed or topped off. Fortunately, the process is simple and won’t take long at all at home!
Checking Your Engine’s Oil
Turn Off the Vehicle – To start, make sure that your vehicle is not running and that you have parked it on a surface that is even. This will provide you with the most accurate reading possible.
Grab a Towel / Cloth – You will need to wipe off the dipstick during the process, so having a clean towel or cloth is important to get an accurate reading.
Locate & Remove Dipstick – After lifting the hood of your vehicle, locate the handle for the dipstick. Generally, this will be a circular or ring-like handle and colored either yellow or orange. Remove the dipstick by pulling on it, and then clean any oil from the stick with your towel.
Place Dipstick Back & Remove Again – After cleaning it the first time, place the dipstick back in its compartment and let it sit for a couple of seconds before removing again.
Check for Oil Level & Coloration – After removing the dipstick again, measure the oil film using the measurement method integrated on the dipstick. If you find your oil is perfectly situated in the appropriate range, you are good to go! Additionally, oil should have a dark brown or black coloration to signify its healthy. If you notice any milkiness or metallic shards in the oil, call Emich VW of Boulder today to get an appointment scheduled as soon as possible!
