The case for a sedan in a county full of SUVs
Boulder buys all-wheel drive by reflex, and for a lot of households that reflex is right. But if your week is a US-36 commute, a CU parking permit and a grocery run to Table Mesa, a Jetta will cost you less to buy, less to fuel and less to park than any SUV on our lot — and it will return 40 MPG on the highway doing it.
The current Jetta runs a 1.5-liter turbocharged four making 158 horsepower through an eight-speed automatic. It is front-wheel drive only; there is no 4MOTION Jetta, and we say that plainly rather than letting you find out in January. What the turbo does give you is altitude-proof power: at 5,430 feet a turbocharged engine does not surrender the output a naturally aspirated one does, which is why the Jetta merges onto the Diagonal with more authority than its horsepower figure suggests.
For 2027 the lineup is S, Sport, SE and SEL, plus the GLI in a single fully loaded Autobahn trim for people who want the 2.0-liter performance version.
2027 Jetta trims, and what changed this year
The news for 2027 sits at the bottom of the range: the S and Sport trims got a real equipment upgrade rather than a badge shuffle.

Volkswagen has not published per-trim MSRP for the 2027 Jetta. For reference, the 2026 Jetta S started at $23,995 MSRP and the 2026 GLI at $33,745 MSRP. Every 2027 car on our lot shows its own window-sticker pricing on its vehicle page.
What 40 MPG is worth on the US-36 run
The Jetta S is EPA-rated at 34 MPG combined, 29 city and 40 highway. Sport, SE and SEL trims come in at 33 combined with the same 29 city and 40 highway figures.

Put that in commuting terms. Boulder to downtown Denver and back is roughly 60 miles, nearly all of it highway. At the Jetta’s 40 MPG highway rating that round trip burns about a gallon and a half. The same commute in a 4MOTION compact SUV rated 25 MPG combined burns closer to two and a half. Over a year of five-day weeks that difference is several hundred gallons — which is the entire argument for buying a sedan in a county that defaults to SUVs.
Front-wheel drive in Boulder: the honest version
There is no all-wheel-drive Jetta. If you regularly drive Magnolia Road in February, or you park at the Eldora lot every weekend, buy a Tiguan with 4MOTION instead — we would rather sell you the right car than the cheaper one.
For the majority of Boulder County driving, front-wheel drive with a proper set of winter tires is genuinely competent. Weight sits over the driven wheels, traction and stability control do the rest, and a winter tire on a front-drive sedan will out-brake an all-season tire on an all-wheel-drive SUV on ice every time. Colorado’s traction law can be satisfied by two-wheel-drive vehicles with adequate tread depth or approved winter tires when it is in effect on I-70 and posted state highways.

An 8-inch touchscreen in every Jetta
The floating touchscreen measures 8 inches on every trim, including the base S — a detail worth noting when rivals still ship a smaller unit at the entry price. For 2027 the S and Sport add Composition Media with satellite radio, natural voice control and two extra speakers for a total of six, along with Premium Speech with AI and Premium Radio availability.
KESSY keyless access with push-button start also becomes standard on S and Sport for 2027, and every 2027 Jetta gets an enhanced rear seatbelt reminder. It adds up to an entry-level sedan that no longer feels like an entry-level sedan.
