Why the Atlas makes sense in Boulder County
Three-row SUVs get bought for two reasons around here: people, and gear. The Atlas is unusual in the segment because its third row is genuinely usable by adults rather than a pair of jump seats, and because every one we stock is 4MOTION all-wheel drive — a decision our inventory makes for you, because that is what gets driven up US-36 and over to Eldora in January.
For 2027 Volkswagen replaced the Atlas with a second-generation car. It is about an inch longer than the outgoing model, with the same width, wheelbase and height, a rebuilt interior with real wood trim and 10-color ambient lighting as standard, and an upgraded 2.0-liter turbo making 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Two model years, both on the lot
Right now we stock both the outgoing 2026 Atlas and the all-new 2027. They are meaningfully different cars, and the 2026 is often the better buy if you care more about price than about the redesign.

What the Atlas will actually pull
The number people quote is 5,000 pounds, and it is real — but it starts at the SE w/Technology trim, which includes the factory-installed hitch. The entry SE is set up with 2,000-pound trailer preparation instead. If towing is the reason you are shopping, that one trim step is the decision.
In practice 5,000 pounds covers a small travel trailer, a two-place enclosed snowmobile trailer, or a loaded utility trailer for a Longmont hardware run. AWD models also add Hill Hold Assist and Hill Descent Control, which matter more on a wet boat ramp or a steep dirt pullout than on the highway.
Maximum tow rating is for a braked trailer, when equipped with the factory-installed hitch and an appropriate trailer brake controller. Vehicle load and accessories reduce capacity.
Fuel economy, and what altitude does not do to it
Volkswagen’s upgraded 2.0-liter for 2027 makes more power and returns better fuel economy than the engine it replaces — a rare combination. Here is how the numbers land.

Because the engine is turbocharged, it does not give away the power a naturally aspirated V6 loses at 5,430 feet. That is the quiet advantage of a modern four-cylinder three-row SUV in Colorado: seven seats and a 5,000-pound rating that still pull properly on the climb out of Boulder toward Nederland.
The cabin Volkswagen rebuilt
The 2027 Atlas moves the gear selector onto the steering column, which frees the console for a bin that charges two phones side by side at 15 watts. Real wood trim and 10-color ambient lighting are standard on every trim, as are three-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel — the equipment list Boulder winters actually use.
The SE runs a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro cluster with a 12.9-inch center display; SE w/Technology and above step up to a 15-inch screen. A Driver Experience Dial on the console handles volume, drive modes and the Atmospheres feature, which ties the ambient lighting and audio together into presets.
Driver assistance is IQ.DRIVE, including the latest Travel Assist with driver-initiated lane changes and an Emergency Assist function that can guide the vehicle to the roadside if it detects a medical emergency. The second-generation car adds a seventh airbag between the front occupants.
Three rows, and what you can do with them
Every Atlas seats seven as standard, with a 50:50 split third row that folds down for cargo and a sliding 60:40 second-row bench that also folds flat. Second-row captain’s chairs are a $695 option if you would rather have six seats and a walk-through.
Practical details that matter on a Sunday: dual hatch lights and a 12-volt outlet in the luggage compartment, rear sunshades standard on every trim, B-pillar air vents so the middle row is not fighting for airflow, and a 115-volt outlet in the second row from SE w/Technology up.
Third row up for the school run, folded flat on Saturday for bikes, boards and a cooler.
Captain’s chairs, rear sunshades and three-zone climate make the Denver-to-Moab run bearable.
