All-wheel alignment is an important investment in your Volkswagen and should be pursued at least once every 12 months. In a Volkswagen four-wheel alignment at Emich Volkswagen in Boulder, CO, our certified technicians will take a close look at several different measurements on your vehicle to ensure you are rolling smoothly. In a 4-wheel alignment, we will look at how your tire sits in the wheel well from several perspectives and analyze how it aligns with your other wheels and alternate points of reference.
An alignment looks at a handful of basic measurements related to your wheels and includes adjustments to correct the problem areas. One measurement is the vertical alignment of your wheel compared to the car’s steering. A second assesses the tilt of the wheels inward or outwards from the front, and a third determines if the “toe” or front of your wheel is tilted in or out. The last measurement is thrust, and it “draws” a line down the center of your vehicle from front to back to see if your wheels are located evenly on either side.
Like all vehicles, a Volkswagen’s alignment can suffer for any number of reasons. Over time, a series of minor bumps and scrapes can leave your tires out of alignment with each other and other key components of the steering system. As you drive, this manifests as a bumpy experience or your car pulling in one direction as you travel down the highway. The pull may be subtle at first but provides a less than ideal motoring experience. It also gradually increases over time as your tires wear unevenly in response to the uneven driving. As the tire weakens in specific areas only, it becomes more susceptible to failure and even a blowout while driving.
An alignment needs to take place at a maximum of 12 months after your last alignment, but alignments can be fickle. If you drive on bumpy, pothole-filled roads, you may need an alignment more regularly. It is also possible to need a new alignment immediately after a prior appointment should you hit a pothole or curb particularly hard. A sudden impact, including a small wreck, can knock your wheels out of alignment instantly. If you notice any steering issues after striking any object, schedule a service appointment immediately.
