How to Check the Oil in Your Volkswagen

Lift the Hood & Locate the Dipstick – Before you attempt to start checking your engine’s oil, make sure that the vehicle hasn’t been running recently so that you don’t burn yourself while conducting your check. Lift the hood on your Volkswagen and then locate the dipstick. This is often easily indicated by a yellow handle or some other visual representation of oil.  Check your manual for details for your specific model.

Use a Paper Towel or Lint-Free Cloth to Wipe Off the Stick – Once you have located the dipstick, pull it out of its area and wipe off the residual oil with a paper towel or lint-free cloth. The level that shows after the initial pull is not accurate to what is currently in your vehicle. Afterward, place it back into its compartment. 

Pull it Back Out and Read Notches – After a couple of seconds, pull the dipstick back out and evaluate it. Your Volkswagen’s oil dipstick has notches that designate when the oil levels are too high, too low, or just right. If you notice that your oil level is right in-between the two notches that signify the oil is too high or too low, you are good to go. However, if you notice that your oil level is at or below the low end of the stick, you should immediately contact Emich VW of Boulder to schedule an oil change.
